Everyone has convictions about life and these convictions guide decisions.

For me the conviction is this, that the design and delivery of architecture are synonymous and one. I believe that a grasp on how things are built helps me make better design choices.

Looking back at the seeds of this particular conviction, I recall two formative experiences.

One, as an enthusiastic art student in life drawing class, where we were encouraged to respect the medium so as to achieve the best mark making.

The second was in my undergraduate days of architecture, and being inspired by the works of Louis Kahn. Where the reward of artistic expression in architecture, comes from a deep understanding of materiality and playful imagination.

Applied to my own context, I personally felt that the more I understood how things were built or made, the better I would be as an architect.

Guided by this conviction, I’ve placed myself in experiences where I sit between the design and the build process in an attempt to be a better Architect.
